Innovative research = enthusiastic teachers
Our department is an international leader in teaching and research. We offer an excellent student-teacher ratio with small class sizes in a collaborative environment. Our research spans the enormity of geological time in geographic realms far and wide: from the tropics to polar regions, continents to oceans, Earth's surface to deep beneath it, and to the Moon and Mars.
In the Earth on the Rocks podcast, you can listen to our faculty members describe their research and how they came to be geoscientists. A new episode is added every Friday morning.
Our undergraduate degrees
We offer a wide range of interdisciplinary undergraduate degrees, including several majors, a minor, and a certificate.
Our graduate degrees
Our four graduate programs encourage multidisciplinary studies that bridge diverse topics. The GRE test is no longer required for graduate applications. Please visit our application page for the updated requirements.
The world is your classroom
Our students participate in life-changing field experiences in the U.S. and around the world, including at IU’s own Geologic Field Station in Montana. In field courses, you’ll engage in hands-on learning and scientific study to better understand our Earth—past, present, and future. When you’re in the classroom, you’ll investigate topics that range from meteorology to mineralogy, paleontology to geology, and the history of our Earth to its future sustainability.
Gain skills employers want
Our programs are designed to equip you with a wide breadth of geoscience knowledge and translatable skills to prepare for a variety of 21st-century career paths. Our graduates pursue careers in the energy and environmental industries, research, education, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and more.
Successful, engaged alumni
Our large alumni network is supportive of our department and our students. Their contributions have helped students gain field experience, access cutting-edge resources, locate internship and job opportunities, and more. We’re proud of their successes and grateful for their support.
