Arndt Schimmelmann, a Research Scientist in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, has received a Fulbright grant from the Core Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.
"My research project aims to develop food standards to aid in the forensic detection of the origin and quality of food items that are sometimes adulterated, for example honey and olive oil. Food standards will be developed and globally distributed by Indiana University, collaborating institutions, and the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria. Pairs of standards will derive from contrasting regions, for example honeys from tropical Vietnam and from subarctic Canada.
The attached picture shows me in a hotel room in Hanoi (Vietnam) a few days ago. In front of me are bottles with tropical jungle honey, vegetable oils, and a bag of rice from the Mekong Delta. I was preparing the U.S. Customs declarations."
