Devastation, Recovery, and Resilience: Haiti’s enduring struggle with natural disasters
Located only a few hundred miles from the southern United States, Haiti has faced repeated destruction following a series of devastating natural disasters, from their regular experience with deadly hurricanes to the horrific 2010 earthquake that left over 200,000 dead, hundreds of thousands injured and homeless, and left the Haitian economy in tatters, followed by the most recent (August 2021) earthquake that devastated Haiti’s southern coast. Throughout its history, Haiti has struggled to prepare for, respond to, and recover from major natural disasters, whose impacts have been exacerbated by patterns of urbanization, poverty, and corruption. This webinar will bring together experts in science, public policy, and hands-on experience with recent Haitian natural disasters to explore both the patterns of vulnerability that have led to these disasters and models of resilience that will help the Haitian people move beyond their troubled history of natural disasters.
