Scholarships & Awards

Our department offers a large number of scholarships and awards to our students each year, due to the generosity of our alumni and donors. These awards help our students to fund their academic pursuits, take advantage of a field experience or study abroad, and participate in research. Many of our scholarships are given to the best proposals for research projects, conference attendance, or field course attendance, others are selected by the faculty based on academic performance and merit in a particular area.

Conference Support

Need funding? Apply for an undergraduate scholarship.

Need funding for research? To attend a conference or field course? Are you a major in an Earth and Atmospheric Sciences degree? Then apply for an undergraduate award.

Applications are now open via IU Scholarships in One.IU for awards and funding for students of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences.

Getting started

First step is to complete the 7 required questions (*) on the University-level application. Skip other questions about past experience, etc. and enter N/A for scholarship essay.

General EAS application

Simply complete the four required EAS questions to be eligible for the following awards:

Undergraduate

Beginning geologist and atmospheric scientist awards
Junior Award (Pruett scholarship)
Senior Award (Cordua Scholarship)
Undergraduate Citizenship Award (Cumings-Mallott Scholarship)
Wintsch Beginning Field Geologist Award (Cumings-Mallott Scholarship)
Sheldon Turner Scholarship (for undergraduate research)
Maynard and Winifred Coller Scholarship (for undergraduate research)
Don and Margie Hattin Field Course Scholarship

Instructions for EAS general application

Do you want to be considered for year-end awards? (yes or no)
Are you currently working on a thesis or dissertation? (yes or no) If yes, you will be asked for title, name of advisor, and whether it involves materials or questions related to state of Indiana.

Have you published a scientific paper since last May? (yes or no) If yes, you will be asked for full citation and DOI if available.

Do you plan to take a field course other than X429 that has special fees including conference field trips? (yes or no) If yes, you will be asked for information about the course and its fees

Awards with special applications

The following awards require specific application materials. Search for “IUB-EAS” in the “further opportunities” section. (note if you are ineligible you will not be able to see these awards)

Rudman-Pavlis Undergraduate Geophysics Award (undergrads only) submit description of your interest in geophysics research

Research Grant-In-Aid (grads and undergrads) submit project title, summary of research goals and project, itemized budget, and summary of other applications you submitted to support your research

Conference Travel Support (no deadline, but unavailable in August; grads and undergrads) submit information about conference, your presentation, and the cost of the conference

Support for EAS undergraduate awards are possible because of the generous support of our former students and other donors who established the following funds:

Senior Student Support Scholarship

Supports an annual scholarship for one student beginning their senior year in the department who has a strong research plan/proposal.

Frank D. and Shirley A. Pruett Undergraduate Scholarship

Frank Pruett got undergraduate and graduate degrees from IU. This fund provides support for junior or senior majors with GPAs of 3.0 or higher.

Sheldon Turner Geological Science Scholarship

Sheldon Turner received his BS degree from IU in 1952. This fund provides support for undergraduate majors.

Lawrence A Taylor Travel Scholarship

Larry Taylor, who got undergraduate and graduate degrees from IU, studied moon rocks returned by Apollo. This award supports undergraduate travel for research and conferences.

N. Gary Lane Award

Gary Lane was a noted IU paleontologist and avid teacher. This award supports students with a demonstrated interest and ability in geology

Maynard and Winifred Coller Scholarship

Maynard Coller was the departmental geochemist for many years. This fund provides support for junior or senior majors with GPAs of 3.0 or higher.

Bill and Jan Cordua Scholarship

Professor Bill Cordua received his Ph.D. from Indiana University in 1973, and he is now teaching. The Bill and Jan Cordua Scholarship is intended for a junior or senior with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Rudman-Pavlis Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Geophysics

Interested in earthquakes, volcanos or seismographs? Consider applying for the Rudman-Pavlis Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Geophysics.
